The Perak Customs Department, together with the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 23 dogs into the country.

The dogs, said to be worth RM20,000, were seized at the Pengkalan Hulu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex on Thursday (September 17th).

According to Perak MAQIS Director Rozita Superman, all the dogs were placed in eight different cages and hidden in a transit truck carrying fruits from Thailand to Singapore.

“All the dogs are without documents, including any import permit issued by MAQIS or a health certificate from the country of origin,” she said.

The case is being investigated under the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or up to six-years’ jail, or both, upon conviction.

We’re glad the dogs are safe!
