There has been plenty of confusion over the “only two people per car” ruling in Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) areas.

To be clear, there is no ruling that the passenger in a car must sit at the back while travelling.

During his daily press briefing yesterday (November 11th), Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob clarified the matter after a video allegedly showing a policeman issuing a fine to a passenger seated in the front of a car, went viral on social media.

It turns out, the fine was actually being issued to the driver because he was using his phone while driving.

“I found out that the police did not summon the passenger, but it was the driver who was caught using his phone while he was driving. He was summoned for that, but he spread the news as if the passenger was the one summoned for sitting next to him,” he explained.

“You can sit anywhere in the car. If you want to sit in front, by all means.”

Ismail also cleared up confusion over two persons from the same household travelling together.

“You come from the same location, you come from the same family, you don’t even need to wear a mask in the car together as you stay under the same roof,” he said.

Ismail then urged Malaysians to be wary of fake news, and directed authorities to take swift action against those who spread false claims on social media.
