The 32-year-old defending champion from China came alive during the rubber set to beat Lee Zii Jia 8-21, 21-19, 21-5 in a 70-minute showdown at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza.
According to The Star, Chen Long started slow while Zii Jia, who injured his wrist in the early stage of the game, got off to an aggressive start to take the opener.
Malaysians, of course, were hoping for Zii Jia to win the second and third deciding set but instead, it was Chen Long who took a commanding lead to head all the way for a win.
Five years ago, Chen Long also crushed our hopes when he defeated Lee Chong Wei in the final at Rio 2016.
Chin up, Malaysians, Zii Jia really did his best and we are so proud of him! Don’t stop supporting our Malaysian athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games!
