Slight haze would usually disperse once the wind picks up, however, in Malaysia, haze can linger for days and even months.

Haze particles can affect the heart and lungs, and give rise to acute symptoms such as cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and fatigue. So if you have a pre-existing heart or lung disorders, it’s best to stay indoors if the haze condition in Malaysia worsens!

Here’s how haze can affect your health, according to Astro Awani:

  • Irritation of the eyes in healthy individuals: watering eyes and/or conjunctivitis (a type of eye inflammation)

  • Irritation of the nose in healthy individuals: running nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, and/or post-nasal drip

  • Irritation of the throat in healthy individuals: dry throat, sore throat and/or coughing, phlegm

  • Headache, dizziness, fatigue and/or stress

  • Decreased lung function, depressed respiratory immune defenses, chest tightness, chest pain, shortness of breath, bronchitis (lung inflammation)

The heart and lungs are particularly affected by particles in haze, posing higher risks for those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions.

Safety measures to take, according to Astro Awani:

  • When you’re home, make sure to close all windows, doors and any openings that may allow haze to enter your home. Turn on the air conditioner if available, and ensure adequate ventilation in closed room
  • Wear a suitable mask if the haze conditions in your area worsens, preferably the N95 mask.

  • Drink more water and increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. This helps the body to flush out toxins absorbed through the skin and lungs, and improve our immune system.

  • Avoid smoking

In general, everyone, even without any health conditions will be affected by the haze.

So, if the haze in your area is getting worse, remember to drink lots of water and stay indoors! Stay safe, guys.
