Any form of film production needs approval from Finas, but what about if it’s just for your own personal social media accounts?
In Parliament today (July 23rd), Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah pointed out that any mainstream media agencies or personal media which produce films on social media platforms or traditional channels must apply for the Film Production License and Film Shooting Certificate (SPP) with Finas.
This rule nothing but screams the obvious, which only leaves the question: What about filming on your own social media platforms?
When other MPs brought the matter up, Datuk Saifuddin simply repeated what the law states.
“Section 22 (1) of the Finas Act reads that no one can take part in any activities to produce, distribute or broadcast any film unless a licence is issued to the person," said Saifuddin in reply to Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi.
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who also questioned Datuk Saifuddin on the matter, told The Star that in order to acquire a Finas licence, an applicant would require a paid-up capital of RM50,000.
So it’s still unclear if you’ll need to get permission to film TikToks and Instagram Stories. Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.
