The Malaysian Association of Film Exhibitors (MAFE) has collectively decided to temporarily suspend operations at all cinemas across the country starting Monday (November 2nd).
The move comes amid the current Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), which requires cinemas to remain closed.
Another saddening fact is that there are barely any new movies coming out soon, which are essential to attract moviegoers back to the cinemas.
MAFE said it wasn’t an easy decision, but it believes the move is necessary for the long term preservation of Malaysian cinemas.
“Cinemas are loved by all Malaysians. We are a key social, communal and cultural epicentre in Malaysia. We help bring to life stories from local and global artistes for millions of Malaysians to enjoy with their loved ones each year,” said MAFE vice-president Cheah Chun Wai.
Here are the temporary closure statements from powerhouses Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), Tanjong Golden Village (TGV) Cinemas and MCAT Box Office (MBO).

The Malaysian cinema industry is of course, larger than MAFE, as it involves everyone who makes a movie possible, and it has undoubtedly been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As it stands, Malaysian cinemas have appealed for government assistance and rental support for the distressed industry, as it struggles to survive.
MAFE has assured that it will monitor the coronavirus situation here closely, and start reopening cinema doors at the soonest possible time.
