On 13 December, Singapore’s land border with Malaysia witnessed an unprecedented surge in crossings, with over 553,000 people making their way through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints in just 24 hours.
This staggering number set a new record, surpassing the previous high of 543,000 crossings in September 2024.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) anticipates this trend will persist throughout the festive season, urging travellers to brace themselves for lengthy waits. Some motorists faced delays of up to three hours due to congestion spilling over from the Malaysian side.
Compared to the same date last year, the volume of travellers on 13 December 2024 reflected a sharp 15% increase. ICA attributes this rise to heightened travel activity during the holiday period, compounded by peak weekend traffic.
In light of these challenges, the ICA has advised travellers to plan their journeys carefully, factoring in extended waiting times. For those seeking quicker alternatives, the authority recommends utilising cross-border bus services instead of private vehicles.

Meanwhile, ICA officials have appealed for public cooperation at the checkpoints, emphasising the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and maintaining lane discipline. Travellers have been reminded that non-compliance or offences at the checkpoints will result in stern action.
As the festive rush continues, remember to drive safely, follow road rules, and exercise patience on the road. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
