1.7 Million Students Will Be Affected By School Closures This CMCO!

All educational institutions under the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Sabah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya will be closed for two weeks following the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

In a statement by the Ministry, all educational institutions registered with the ministry which includes kindergartens, day schools, boarding schools, private schools, vocational colleges and Institutes of Teacher Education (IPGs).

According to the New Straits Times, all schools in Sabah will be closed starting from 13 October to 26 October, while Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya from October 14 to October 27.

In the statement, it said: “This is following an announcement by the Defence Minister today on the implementation of the CMCO for the whole of Sabah starting 13 October, and the whole of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya starting 14 October.”

The Education Ministry is expected to affect approximately 1.7 million students and 2,797 institutions in the CMCO areas, which includes 1,336 institutions with 511,349 students in Sabah; 1,088 institutions with 935,984 students in Selangor; 344 institutions and 254,639 students in Kuala Lumpur; and 29 institutions with 31,917 students in Putrajaya.

“Parents or guardians can bring students in hostels home. Students who are waiting for their parents or choose to remain at the hostels during the closure will be under the supervision of wardens. Their meals throughout the period will be cared for by the respective schools,” the statement read.

The ministry added that the school management would issue letters to parents or guardians to fetch the students, “This letter would serve as a reference to the authorities should they need to travel interstate to collect their children.”

As for students who are sitting for international exams during the CMCO, they too, would need to obtain a letter from their respective schools to attend exams.

“Teaching and learning (PdP) activities during school closure must also be given attention. The management of these educational institutions are directed to ensure that teachers or lecturers, as well as students conduct PdP at home,” the statement said.
