Grab Testing New Feature To Let Driver And Passenger Record Audio During Rides

Grab Malaysia has announced that it will be piloting AudioProtect (beta), a new safety feature that lets driver-partners and passengers record audio during rides.

Users can activate the feature in Safety Settings under My Account and will be prompted to enable the feature when they book a ride.

According to their Help page, Grab stated that the ride will only be recorded when both the driver and the passenger have enabled the feature. The recording will start from the moment the driver arrives to pick up the passenger and end when the ride is completed.

The audio recording files will be automatically deleted from your device after 10 days if no safety incident is reported by either parties.

The feature is currently only available to selected users in Penang and Johor Bahru, so if you’re travelling out of the trial cities, the feature will be disabled.

Users do not have access to the recordings, though. The files will be encrypted and accessible only to Grab-authorized personnel, law enforcement officials, and government authorities for safety investigation purposes in the event a safety incident is reported.
