Malaysians, in general, may not be familiar with Tourette Syndrome, but experts estimated between 0.3 to 1.0% of the Malaysian population across all cultures and races are likely to develop the syndrome.
According to Hospital Kuala Lumpur neurologist, Dr. Ahmad Shahir Mawardi says that Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that usually starts with tic symptoms, which involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds that cannot be easily controlled. The individual might blurt out inappropriate and offensive words.
Just last week, SYOK got the chance to speak to Chris Wong, a Malaysian who has been living with the disorder for the past 20 years…
He shared with us that one of the biggest challenges he had to face while living with Tourette's is the way people perceived him, “I used to not like to go out because I am scared that people would look at me in a weird way.
“I felt really uncomfortable,” he told SYOK.
He also shares how growing up, people, including his teachers and schoolmates would bully him about his tics, however, it has gotten better now since people are aware and have more understanding about the disorder.
He believes that the most important thing is that you’re happy and that you’re proud of yourself!
