Celebrate Malaysia’s Cultural Heritage Through Art At Usaha Tegas Art Competition 2023

Bringing art closer to engage and establish connections with communities, the Usaha Tegas Heritage Art Competition marks its 23rd year, inviting young Malaysian artists to delve into the nation's profound cultural history through artistic expression. This competition centers around the theme of "Malaysian Heritage," with a special focus on our country's intangible cultural heritage for this year's edition.

This theme aligns with Malaysia's participation in the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (IGCICH) under UNESCO for the 2022-2026 term.

Henry Tan, Chairperson of the UT Heritage Art Competition, emphasized, "Our intangible cultural heritage encapsulates the traditional knowledge, skills, practices, and vibrant expressions inherited from our ancestors and transmitted through generations. While physical structures, landmarks, and historical sites are often meticulously preserved and restored, the intangible cultural heritage, encompassing oral traditions, performing arts, customs, social practices, and traditional crafts, tends to be overlooked. We firmly believe that intangible cultural heritage is just as vital as tangible heritage in upholding cultural diversity and ensuring the endurance of our traditions for the forthcoming generations of Malaysians."

This yearly event welcomes emerging young talents from Malaysian educational institutions, particularly those in universities and colleges. The competition encompasses five artwork categories: charcoal, pencil, oil pastel, ink, mixed media, oil or acrylic, printmaking, and watercolor. Participants have the freedom to submit multiple entries across various categories.

In each category, the top prize winner will receive RM8,000 in cash, the runner-up will be awarded RM3,000 in cash, the third-place winner will receive RM2,000 in cash, and two consolation prize winners will each be granted RM500. Furthermore, all winners will receive an award certificate and RM500 worth of TGV Cinemas vouchers.

All young Malaysian artists are encouraged to partake in this competition, celebrating the abundant cultural heritage of Malaysia. The registration deadline is September 30, 2023, and the final artwork submission deadline is October 9, 2023.

Usaha Tegas, established by Mr. T Ananda Krishnan, has interests in a range of local and international enterprises spanning telecommunications, media, property, oil & gas, and more.
