If you don’t already know, Penang is one place in Malaysia that has preserved most of its colonial architecture, with several businesses incorporating themselves into the structure of the building.
And one of these buildings is the Birch House on Dato’ Keramat Road in George Town.
The colonial mansion, which once served as the office for tin smelting firm, Eastern Smelting in the 19th century, now houses a McDonald’s outlet, which has just been listed among the franchise’s 30 most unique branches in the world!
And we have to agree!
McDonald’s operates more than 34,000 restaurants worldwide in 118 countries, but some outlets are more uniquely-designed than others.
Some of these branches can be found inside old train stations, decommissioned planes, and of course, century-old colonial mansions.

The Birch House was built in 1908, and was named after Sir Ernest Woodford Birch, who was the British Resident of the neighbouring Sultanate of Perak between 1905 and 1909.
Tin that was mined in the Sultanate of Perak as well as southern Thailand used to be shipped to George Town, where it was then transported to the adjacent tin smelting facility on Dato’ Keramat Road to be smelted into tin materials.
Today, the fully-restored Birch House is part of Penang Times Square, and is home to this 24-hour McDonald’s branch.
