Malaysian portrait photographer Catherhea Potjanaporn will receive the award on 8 November, alongside four others from across the world, including investigative journalist and filmmaker Kiki Mordi from Nigeria, British racial justice campaigner Temi Mwale from the UK, Black transgender activist Raquel Willis from the US, and racial activist and award-winning journalist Luiza Brasil from Brazil.

The award recognises these five women for “their powerful work on the frontlines of the fight for racial and social justice across the world”.

After the announcement was made, Potjanaporn said in a tweet that the award was “so very humbling”.

She has been described as a “portrait photographer who captures diverse faces and bodies, to draw attention to underrepresented communities in Malaysia and challenge conventional beauty standards.

A lot of her beautiful work focuses on elevating women of colour and their stories.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the award will be presented by Leigh-Anne Pinnock from the British girl group, Little Mix, during a “pre-game show” before the actual award ceremony.

Congratulations, Catherhea! What an honour!
