MERCY Malaysia’s emergency response to the virus outbreak in Sabah was an initial step to relaunch its COVID-19 Emergency Response operations.

On top of recovery activities that have been implemented since August this year, MERCY Malaysia has outlined several areas of responsibility within the scope of public health in order to assist and ease the burden of government agencies as well as the public during this third wave of the pandemic outbreak.

To support the Health Ministry in preventing or slowing transmission, MERCY plans to set up nine COVID-19 screening stations, in which three sites will be set up in West Malaysia and six sites in East Malaysia and 180 volunteers will be deployed in two phases, with 10 volunteers will man each site for eight days consecutively for 72 days.
MERCY has also decided to extend its COVID-19 testing (swabbing) activities at five locations identified as red zones that include Selangor, QFFD Klinik Ampang, Kedah, Sabah, and Sarawak for 200 days with 10 medical volunteers to conduct the swab test at a time.

MERCY will also be assisting in supplying ICU and COVID-19 related healthcare equipment to healthcare facilities, which include viral transport media (VTM), antigen rapid test kits (RTK-Ag), distribution of PPE sets and masks to agencies and Klinik Kesihatan that require this vital support.
Our PPE Sewing Project continues to go strong, supported by volunteers who give up weekends to help with the cutting. The pre-cut fabrics will be sent to 8 PPR locations, where 39 sewists are involved in this income-generating livelihood programme.

The operational objective of MERCY Malaysia’s COVID-19 Third Wave Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan is to contribute to reducing morbidity, mortality, and social impacts of the outbreak’s third wave by preventing and slowing transmission and helping to ensure communities affected by the outbreak maintain access to basic social services and able to support themselves throughout the course of the outbreak.
