Is It Safe To Use Your Phone During A Thunderstorm? Here’s The Truth!

Is it dangerous to use a phone during a thunderstorm because of lightning? After all, that’s what we’ve been told our whole lives.

Apparently, according to the Chicago Tribune, there is no danger! You can use your phone during a thunderstorm without worrying about getting struck by lightning!

The electric charge associated with lightning is conducted through the air and ground, along paths of least electrical resistance. Meaning, if lightning strikes near a building (a tree next to a house, for example), it’s electric charge can be conducted into the structure through your phone and other electric lines.

Even if they are buried, or in underground water or gas pipes!

This is why using a corded telephone during a thunderstorm is discouraged because the phone is physically connected by wires to the outside. Your handphone, however, has no physical connection and the electric current from a nearby lightning strike cannot reach it.

So yeah, we are today years old when we found out that it is perfectly safe to use a phone during a thunderstorm.
