Google Malaysia released its annual “Malaysian Year in Search” recently, to take a look back at 2019’s collective trending searches- what did Malaysians Google the most this year?
Taking this year’s top spot is ‘Earth Day Quiz’! Remember that quiz by Google for Earth Day that assigned us with cute little animals based on our snacks and hobbies?

From loving the earth, we oddly enough also loved the one who ‘destroys’ it. Give it up for the big purple infinity stone lover, Thanos, for being the second most searched trend this year. From his inspiring quotes to relatable memes, we sure do love our Mad Titan.
A lot of us also looked into ‘Bantuan Sara Hidup’ the government-funded living aid and the ‘Copa America 2019 soccer tournament’ which is now in its 46th edition, with host nation Brazil taking home their 9th winning title.
In light of the haze which enshrouded nearly half of the country, most of us frantically checked the ‘Air Pollutant Index of Malaysia’ (APIMS, too. Muslims may even have prayed for the haze to stop by constantly checking the ‘Islamic prayer times’.
The unsettling and sadistic Joker is next in Google’s list of Malaysia’s most searched trends and it sure was everyone’s Halloween costume this year too. Malaysians were also a fan of ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Avengers Endgame’ (duh, it was just the biggest movie to come out this year, kan?). The SUV ‘Perodua Aruz’ launched early this year also squeezed its way into the list of top 10 trending searches.

Meanwhile, in the list of top trending people, ‘Vanessa Angel’ comes in first amidst a recent um… scandal. Malaysians also looked into the Minister of Economic Affairs and Deputy President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat ‘Azmin Ali’ as the political race for the next prime minister intensifies.

As for Music, Malaysian sure loved #Shawmila, with Camilla Cabello and Shawn Mendes topping the list! Mimpi by K-Clique and Memories by Maroon 5 made it in the 2nd and 3rd spot, but who could remember a time everyone was dancing to Kill This Love by Black Pink?

As for top trending news, the API index still made the list but the election in Tanjung Piai that saw Barisan Nasional’s victory was also most searched topic by Malaysians alongside the Belanjawan 2020. Malaysian’s love for Boba Tea is clearly not dying down anytime soon either, as popular Boba tea joint, The Alley, was also in the list of most searched news topic!
And there you have it! What do you think Malaysians can look forward to in 2020?
