21 Malaysians Band Together to Free Female Malayan Tiger Caught in Poacher's Trap

In a truly inspiring act of courage and compassion, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) successfully rescued an 80kg female Malayan tiger from a perilous poacher's trap in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

The rescue operation was a collective effort, with dedicated individuals from the Wildlife Conservation Division, Perhilitan Headquarters Kuala Lumpur, Perhilitan Kelantan, the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, and the National Tiger Conservation Centre coming together to save this endangered creature.

The rescue was far from easy, as the injured female tiger remained a formidable and potentially dangerous animal throughout the operation. Adding to the challenge was the difficult terrain, with the poacher's trap situated on a steep riverbank at NTT Metro Farm in Gua Musang's Pos Blau.

Despite these obstacles, the brave team persevered. Braving heavy rain, they used a motorboat to reach the location and assess the condition of the tiger. The whole rescue process, from preparations to administering tranquillisers, treating wounds, and carefully moving the tiger into a specially prepared transport vehicle, was captured in a captivating 2-minute-17-second video released by Perhilitan.

The tiger had been trapped by its front left ankle, but with utmost care and expertise, the rescue team successfully freed her from the snare. This meticulous operation involved the collaboration of 21 personnel and took approximately three hours, including physical examinations and blood tests, to safely transport the tiger to the vehicle.

Thanks to the dedication and selflessness of the rescue team, the female Malayan tiger is now safe and receiving the care she needs at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre.
