Despite finishing almost six minutes later than the winner, Vietnamese track star Nguyen Thi Oanh, Bou's unwavering determination to finish the race did not go unnoticed. In a video of the race, Bou can be seen running towards the finish line in the heavy rain, putting all her energy into every step.
When she finally crossed the finish line, some supporters cheered for her, and she acknowledged them with a grateful gesture.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Bou broke down in tears and was handed a Cambodian flag which she used to wipe her tears before bowing to her supporters.
Many netizens who watched the video were touched by her never-give-up attitude. Her perseverance has inspired people all over the world to never give up on their dreams, no matter how difficult the journey may be.
To show their appreciation for her tenacity, Bou was awarded 250 USD (RM1,115) by the information minister Khieu Kanharith.
