According to Entertainment Weekly, Yeoh’s casting also means that she will be reuniting with her Crazy Rich Asians co-star, Awkwafina, who was previously confirmed to star alongside Liu.
Michelle Yeoh will be playing a character named Jiang Nan.
“When the movie was announced last year and they introduced who they were doing as the Marvel superhero, and it was an Asian superhero, it was like, ‘Yes, finally!’ When do we get to be represented like that?” Yeoh said at the Time event, according to The Star.
The 58-year-old actress took to her Instagram page to confirm her role in Shang-Chi as well.
Shang-Chi completed filming earlier this year, after production shut down briefly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Directed by Short Term 12’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, and written by David Callaham, the film will mark the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction of Shang-Chi, an expert fighter and martial artist who made his comic debut in 1973, created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin.
Shang-Chi will hit theaters on July 9th, 2021, also stars Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, former TVB star Fala Chen and Malaysia-born comedian Ronny Chieng.
