Local movie Paramapatham (Snake and Ladder Gameboard) has been sent to compete in the Best Foreign Film Category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards next year.

The yet-to-be-released Tamil thriller will be among 139 foreign language films from 77 countries vying for the top prize.

Directed by Viknesh and Thanesh Perrabu, Paramapatham will be competing against entries from India - Asuran as well as Soorarai Pottru - in the same category.

The film tells the story of an archaeologist, Aroon, and three of his friends who go on a trip, during which Aroon finds an ancient board game, and what happens next makes up the story.

It is loosely based on the popular Snakes and Ladders board game, which actually originated in India about a thousand years ago, but of course, there will be more unique elements explored throughout the movie.

Earlier this year, Paramapatham joined the grand Asian Book of Records, which is a certified entity under the Guinness World Records.

It also swept at least 16 awards, including the Best Cinematography Award, Best Feature, Best Director Award, and many more at various film festivals, which placed it in the Malaysia Book of Records for "Most Tamil Movie Awards won by a Movie Director".

Paramapatham’s release has been postponed multiple times, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now its makers are considering the possibility of releasing the CGI and special effects-laden flick on the OTT (Over-The-Top) streaming media service next year, if cinemas do not reopen for business anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the 78th Golden Globe Awards is set to be held on February 28th, 2021.

Congratulations to the team!
