Who else learned their English by reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
In April 2007, readers around the world were introduced to Greg Heffley and were quickly swept up with the riotous antics of one unforgettable wimpy kid. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” was an instant bestseller and became the first in a 16-book “Wimpy Kid” series (which also spawned a three-book “Awesome Friendly Kid” spin-off series).
The book is credited for helping millions of kids discover the joy of reading. Today, the series has become one of the top-five bestselling book series—adult and kids—of all time, with more than 250 million copies in print.
20th Century Fox began releasing a series of popular live-action films based on the book series in 2010, but the studio was also interested in potential animated versions of the “Wimpy Kid” stories utilizing the charming, stick figure drawings familiar to readers around the world.
Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” was published in 2007. Now, 14 years later, he’s telling that first story to a brand new audience, which he finds thrilling. “That is really exciting to me because this is the ultimate version of the first book,” Kinney says. “I think it is better than my first book in so many ways, and to have this opportunity to work with Disney and create such a first-class production, is just an incredible privilege.”
