The ministry announced the 18% toll discount last week, which has taken effect from 1st February 2020 (Saturday) at all PLUS-operated highways covering the North-South Expressway (NSE), the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE), the Malaysia-Singapore Second Crossing (LINKEDUA), the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH), the Butterworth - Kulim Expressway (BKE), the East-Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) and the Penang Bridge (PB).

Ministry of Finance, Lim Guan Eng, said in a statement that the government is looking to save RM42 billion during the span of the new concession period, which will last till 2058. The decision made will allow both the government and consumers to enjoy a total savings of RM1.1 billion this year alone. This includes a saving of RM0.5 billion from the 18% discount, as well as a saving of RM0.6 billion from the government’s compensation payments for freezing toll rate hikes.

He hopes that the savings will, in turn, be channeled into welfare programs and economic development that will benefit the people as a whole.

According to PLUS, the initiative will benefit a total of 1.7 million road users as they are now able to enjoy more savings when they travel on PLUS operated highways.

“The toll reduction will cover all Passenger Vehicles (Class 1), Taxis (Class 4) and Buses (Class 5) and will remain unchanged until the concession ends. Meanwhile, the toll fares for lorries (Classes 2 & 3) will remain unchanged and will not be increased until the end of the PLUS Concession in 2058.”

“The toll reduction will also cover Passenger and Taxi (Class 2) and Bus (Class 3, 4 and 5) vehicles at the Penang Bridge Toll Plaza. Class 2 vehicles registered with PLUS and for those working and residing in Penang will enjoy the 18 percent reduction on top of the existing 20 percent discount.”
