Khairy Jamaluddin doesn’t make empty promises! He will be the first person to take China’s Sinovac vaccine.

The Science, Technology and Innovation Minister said earlier that he would be taking the next COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) to prove that it is safe.

“Whatever vaccine that crosses the line next, I will take that. And I don’t know which one that will be.”

“If it’s Sinovac, it will be Sinovac. If it’s the Russian vaccine, it will be the Russian vaccine. If it’s the AstraZeneca one, it will be that," he said.

Now that a conditional approval has been granted for the use of the Sinovac vaccine, this means he will be rolling up his sleeves for this vaccine.

A conditional approval for a vaccine means it will be allowed to be administered in the country but with monitoring by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for one year.

Sinovac will be the second vaccine after Pfizer-BioNTech to be used in the National Immunisation Programme.

Khairy had opted out from taking the Pfizer vaccine to set a positive example and encourage people to accept whatever vaccine is on offer.

He also dismissed claims that politicians and leaders will only take the Pfizer jab.

“I have been looking into the views of Malaysians. The Prime Minister, the Health director-general, some ministers and frontliners have started to receive the vaccine, and as such, Malaysians have confidence in the Pfizer vaccine. So the rakyat are wondering if the leaders are taking the Pfizer vaccine, which is the ‘good stuff’, and the remaining vaccines are for the ‘normal people’," he explained.

So far, 4,161,915 individuals have registered to receive the COVID-19 vaccine via the MySejahtera app.

If you’ve yet to register to get vaccinated, you can do so via MySejahtera (Apple App StoreGoogle Play StoreHuawei App Gallery), or register at vaksincovid.gov.my, or call the hotline at 1-800-888-828.

If you’re still having doubts about the vaccine, this exclusive with Universiti Malaya’s Prof Dr Victor Hoe will help ease your fears.
