This Feisty Grandmother Walked From Johor Bahru To Singapore Just To Take Care Of Her Husband

Apr 02, 2020

Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO) has just been extended till the 14 April. During this period, commuting between Singapore and Malaysia has been discouraged, with no vehicles allowed in and out of the two countries and both governments advising its citizens to stay put where there are.

This feisty 66-year-old woman however, after hearing news about her ill spouse, walked all the way from Johor Bahru to Singapore just to be by his side!

Her son, Herman shared on Facebook, of the story of his mother who had to travel on foot for hours, just to take care of her ill husband.

Herman wrote that about two weeks ago, his mum had come to Johor Bharu to help take care of his three-month-old baby while his wife was undergoing an operation. His mother later received news that her 80-year-old husband (who is back in Singapore) had fallen sick and was missing her.

Unfortunately, due to Malaysia’s MCO, there were no buses, trains or cars that could enter or leave the country.

Herman’s mother, who has leg and knee problems, then decided to walk all the way to the Johor Bahru customs- just so she can return to Singapore. She had to stop and rest every few minutes, due to her condition.

According to Herman, this was the first time his mother had to make the journey across the Causeway on foot, as he would always send her back using his car whenever she came to visit him in Johor Bahru. Despite Herman’s father advising her against making the tiring journey, she was determined to go home to her sick husband.

Herman allowed her to make the travel only if there was transport available but after checking all the necessary information, it seemed that everyone who crossed the causeway did so on foot!

His mother was accompanied by Herman’s 20-year-old niece during the walk back to Singapore, who was in charge of carrying the luggage and sending updates to Herman every few minutes.

The journey along the causeway took her around an hour and as soon as they reached the Singapore customs, two Immigration and Checkpoints Authority staff helped to push his mother to the immigration office in a wheelchair.

According to her, there were many Singaporeans returning from Malaysia including the elderly, pregnant women, those with child strollers and even wheelchair-bound folks, who had to make the same journey from Johor Bharu back to Singapore on foot after the MCO came into effect.

His mother has safely arrived home in the arms of her husband and is currently observing the 14-day Stay-Home Notice.

As a few netizens had left negative comments on his posting, Herman reminded everyone to be respectful of one another and for all of us stay safe and be in good health during these trying times!

What a strong woman!
